Yep, Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Detroit Diesel added it to cut down on emissions. CAT took a different approach and avoided EGR.

Michael, was Cats approach the slobber tube. I had an 07 Cat and it had what we called the slobber tube and it would throw oil on your tow on every trip. Put too much oil in crank case and it would be all over the car in a 100 miles. Terrible, and if you had a rear radiator, you better run the tube beyond it or it would blow oil into the radiator and here comes the dirt. No more rear radiators for me.

Chappell, I had the exact same experience with a Cat, rear radiator, and had to divert the slobber tube to the side of the coach.

Effective for 2007 model year ENGINES, crankcase emissions (slobber tube gases) had to be added to the exhaust emissions for emission testing compliance. CAT responded with their ACERT 2 (second generation) engines which used particulate filters and NOx catalysts to achieve emissions compliance. They announced in 2008 that they would be exiting the U.S. highway engine market prior to the 2010 emission standards taking effect.

Thanks Michael, my motor home was a 07 and the engine was probably a 05 or 06. Engines usually run several years behind the coach year as you well know. My 99 Newell has a 97 engine as stamped in the casting on the end of the engine when one opens the back engine compartment. Looking at the tag left of the drivers seat, Newell started building my coach in March of 98.

Your 07 likely had the original CAT ACERT engine that was created to comply with the 2004 emission requirements.

I'm unable to say which years the Power Tech generators started but I've worked on some that had 20KW generator ends with a 15KW engine, the last one (I worked on) being in coach 785. PT called these 20Kw. Shortly afterwards was the switch to Martin Diesel's sets, which had 4TNE84T Yanmar engines. This is the same engine used by Kohler in their 20KW sets.

Interesting Gordon. I was unaware of the 20KW/15KW engine situation.

Prior to the 2000 models, most Newells had Kohler generators. I know of a number of 2000, 2001 and 2002 Newells with Power Tech generators. By late 2003 models, most of the Newells I am familiar with had Power Tech generators that are listed as 20KW. Although an occasional Newell will show up with a different brand typically due to the owner specifying another brand. 2007 models seemed to be primarily fitted with "15KW Power Tech" generators.

I think I heard that the 15K was suppose to be enough but latter prove not to be in all cases. I thing some coaches were refitted with 20K and then everything went back to them.
