I believe that if the rig weighs more than 26,001 # a DOT number and CDL may be required. I have put 150,000 miles on a Dodge 3500/Cummins 4 door with a Banks tuner pulling 30,000+most of the time. My routes never involve any significant hills though. It gets 11-12 mpg towing and 20 mpg with no trailer.
