"the roof had waves in the aluminum skin. Is this common?"
Mine does not have the denting in the curved or painted part. Mine does have waves in the flat top part--waves, not dents. Even the top in your photo the waves are far more extreme than my roof.
I went out & took photos of mine. I now wonder if some of the waviness is due to light deflection. You saw it in person, so only you can determine if it looked like the photo in person. In my photos, some of the light deflection looks like waves or denting, which is not present with the naked eye.
i turned on operating room bright lights and took the pictures. i have 126 T5 HO 4 foot bulbs in the shop
my 02 had a lot of foot traffic on the roof before i got it. so in bright light it shows the waves alot. the 99 i was a little farther away so it is not as easy to see.
i do have to buff my roof to make it as shiney as steves.....ha

Referring to the pic posted by WRVAlpine: I’m wondering if it got rubbed along a large tree branch and was repaired. It appears to be more wavy on the convex surface than others. A repair in that area could be difficult if the aluminum had been stretched. It is also possible that it just might show the waves more since it is a dark color and very shiny.

Gents, thank you for the pictures. All of your pictures look pretty normal to me and wouldn’t raise suspicions if I saw yours. But these wave/wrinkles were really obvious. We will be traveling back near the coach this weekend and try to take a second look.
We are also going to look at a 2000 in the St Louis area this Sat. Starting to get our feet wet.
