Room 2 slide won't extend

Upon returning from a week trip the rear (room2) slide would not extend.  It was first thought the locking pins were bound.  This proved to be incorrect.  I called Creslie who connected me with Mark.  His thought was a failed solenoid.  

A search in the slide threads produced the name of Paul, a HWH field technician serving the west.  He suggested the fluid pressure be checked and the possibility of a failed solenoid.  I purchased a 5000 psi filled gauge and a short tail.  Connecting it to the manifold produced a pressure of 3300 psi, well within the 32 to 34 hundred range.  At this point I want to express the caution that should be exercised with high pressure fluids.  A danger of injecting the fluid under the skin exists and usually with less than a desirable outcome, often amputation or serious infection.   Always bleed the pressure off before any fittings are opened.

I purchased an solenoid 2.25" (1.5" are also used on some systems)  and sought to determine which was the culprit.  No drawing existed at Newell but several close and by process of elimination the correct set was found.  I made up a Weatherpack male/female patch with a pilot light which would enable a visual if voltage was present.  No voltage was found on either lock or unlock. (I had a helper operating the extend/retract switch).  

The control boards consist of logic and output (for this discussion) and are separate for ROOM 1 & ROOM 2, the output  boards have LED's.  Yellow for the signal to the relay and red for the fused voltage out of the relay.  Neither were illuminating.  I then removed the board since it would not swing on the hinged standoffs.  There I found the ribbon cable from the logic board pulled loose from the output board.  Plugging it back in and a test produced results!  The slide went out!! 

I watched the LED's as the unlock then extend then lock illuminated.  There are LED's for pressure, pump, seals, and others. I could not find a drawing to match exactly but did find a Marathon drawing with the same numbers as used on this coach.

Hopefully this thread will assist someone else with a non-extending slide.

Great post. I really liked the idea of the patch with the indicator light. Clever.

Here is a document taken directly from the HWH site. It is the closest I have found to the system on my 99 two slide coach. It is listed on the HWH site for Foretravel. There are some differences in in the air leveling setup such as a separate six pack for the tag, but the diagrams, hydraulic piping, and board schematics are identical to my coach as best as I can tell.

Our slides are not extending (and probably not retracting) either. I called Newell a few days ago and I went through a couple of things to check. I think it was Mark who is the HWH specialist at Newell. He suggested checking the fuses on the control board to make sure there were none blown. There are like 20 fuses in there! It seems like the starter motor/pump is not running and he suggested that since the alternator is currently dead that it could be the problem since the pump requires 14 volts to get going. I checked the hydraulic oil and it was at the first (low) mark on the dipstick... any suggestions? I will get my wife to try to extend the bedroom and see if there are any lights showing inside the control board area...

Merge batteries and see what happens. If low chassis batts due to alternator is the issue, merging the batteries should give you enough juice to move the slides.

If the motor does not start up when you press the extend button for the slides, then the slides are NOT GOING TO MOVE.  Easy to check voltage to the motor if you have a volt meter & know how to use it.  I'll assume you do or can find some one who does.

Since you don't have a working alternator, start the genset & merge the batteries.  Wait 5 minutes.  The HWH motor solenoid & motor is in the first compartment on the left side(L-1).  The motor sits at the bottom of the HWH solenoid manifold. Ignition key "on" for testing.  

Have Karen press the "extend" button while you stand at the HWH compartment.  You should hear a click.  Now locate the HWH motor solenoid that in my coach  is attached to the rear wall--I am not referring to the hydraulic solenoids.  Easy to recognize the motor solenoid as it has a OO battery cable going to it, then a OO battery cable going to the motor.  Have Karen press the extend button again while checking voltage to the solenoid.  Then have Karen press the extend button again and measure voltage at the battery cable coming out of solenoid going to the motor.  

If you have good voltage (13 to 14 volts) going to the HWH motor solenoid, but no voltage going to the motor the HWH motor solenoid has failed.  If you have good voltage(13 to 14 volts) going in and out of the HWH motor solenoid, then check the voltage at the motor where the battery cable connects while Karen pushes the extend button.  If you have no voltage at the motor the battery cable from the solenoid has failed.  If good voltage at the motor battery cable connection and the motor doesn't start when Karen pushes the extend button, then the motor has failed.

Either you perform the above tests or have some one do them & report back with the results.  We can then move toward correcting the problem.  This is where to start.

This happened to me several years ago when my alternator gave up the ghost.
Being an EE I quickly found the voltage from the control board to the contactor that operates the hydraulic pump was insufficient to energize the contractor. I am of the opinion that the slides should function without the coach running if I want ( they had not to that point ) and I installed a small interposing relay between the output of the control board and the contactor for the pump. Problem solved and slides operate whenever i want them to now. If the front one would stop at the correct position so the pins could lock I would be really happy. Two trips to Newell and that problem still exists :-(

In my coach.......

There are a couple of fuses labeled HWH in the passenger kick well.

There are mucho fuses inside the silver HWH box in the bay under the driver. Some of them are hidden behind one of the circuit boards. Those fuses are for individual solenoids in the system. Read Gordon's post carefully as he tells how to interpret the led lights on the boards instead of pulling every fuse.

And I have a couple of inline fuses in bay under the driver that feed into the HWH control box which I have no clue what they are connected to.

Thanks for all the advice! I did check the power and it was good through the relay and up to the motor. I suspect the motor had an untimely death and I am going to pull it and have it rebuilt asap. You may want to disconnect power before you start pulling those circuit boards to see all the fuses in the silver HWH box. I was looking all over the bay for the box and it is so big that I didn't see it! It is probably 18" x 18" x 2" on the rear wall (towards the back of the coach) of the bay. We are living in tight quarters but it is not too bad...

Back when our coaches were built HWH installed a motor that Newell now suggests be replaced with a larger motor.  Although the newer motor is larger it still installs with the same two bolts without any alterations.  Newell gets around $400 for a new motor, you should be able to get one for around $100.  You may find you can buy a new motor for not much more than having your old motor rebuilt.  My experience has not been good with having motors rebuilt.  Removing the motor does not allow any of the hydraulic fluid to be lost.  R & R is no more than a one hour job for either motor.  Two mounting bolts, a 12V battery cable and there may be (can't remember for sure) a ground wire.
