This applies to all Newell's from 1990. Late 1980 Newells are mostly, but not exactly the same.
VIN will be 17 numbers and letters. There are VIN decoders for Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc but they will crash when entering the VIN for a Newell.
The following applies for a 1990 or newer Newell:
First 2 characters: 1N = (always 1N for 1986+ Newells) Made in United States
3rd character: 9 = (always 9 for 1986+ Newells) Manufacturer makes less than 500 vehicles/year
Digits 4-6: xxx = three numbers (for 1990+ Newells), representing the length in feet and inches 458 is 45'8"
Digits 7-8: X8 = as with digits 4-6 this is up to the manufacturer, Newell has used X8 for digits 7 & 8 for all the VIN numbers I have seen from 1990 on.
Digit 9: x = a check digit determined based on the other 16 digits
Digit 10: x = year of vehicle (code begins with an A in 1980, and again in 2010, and increments 1 letter per year but skips I, so J is a 1988 and will be a 2018, skips O (so it doesn't look like a zero) so P is a 1993 and will be a 2023, skips Q (again to avoid confusion) so R is a 1994 and will be a 2024, skips U so V is 1997 and will be 2027, skips Z and starts numbers so a 1 is a 2001 and will be a 2031. This will ALWAYS tell you the year model of the Newell within a 30 year window (1980-2009 when it starts over for 2010-2039).
Digit 11: 1 = (always 1 for Newells) Plant Code (Miami, OK)
Digit 12-14: 011 = (always 011 for Newells) indicates the manufacturer is Newell (in conjunction with first 3 characters of VIN)
Digit 15-17: 281 = Sequence Number, which for Newell is the coach number for coaches through 815 and is the last three digits of the coach number for coaches number 1200 or greater which occurred in 2007 models (Newell skipped 816-1100 to catch up for the pre-1986 coaches since Newell started in 1986 with coach 1 in their 'new' numbering system.
