Found a Detroit/Allison in Middletown, CT that had a transmission in stock and can start the job this morning! We made a 18 MPH Smokey & the Bandit run last night and arrived at 5 AM. We even had a police escort for part of it, what a wonderful Trooper. Hopefully we can drive it out of here Thursday night.

So the transmission had to be replaced?

Yes, that's the general consensus. We could have chosen to take it out, tear it apart & try to repair it locally but the savings would be minimal & the risk moderate considering where all of that debris may have gone. We would also be here a few days more in a hotel. The transmission itself which was rebuilt by Allison is $8345.07 + labor, fluid, taxes, etc. and has a 2 year warranty.
Interestingly enough my last coach had the same Allison 4000 which was replaced at about 45,000 miles by a previous owner. The Weller Reman replacement was good when I sold it at 110,000 miles.

I got anxiety reading your post, I've only driven our coach on 3 trips two of them left me on the side of the road so I'm gun shy I guess but limping it down the highway at 18 miles per hour shows you got what it takes. Glad your getting this taken care of but sorry it happened.

Glad to hear you found a solution and pretty quick one at that. I guess that is one advantage of breaking down in the most densely populated part of the country. Of course when it happens, I-95 anywhere can be a white knuckle experience. Hope you can resume your trip soon and enjoy some Bar Harbor lobster in your coach.

Thanks Rob, They pulled it into the shop at 0830 and started on it immediately. I feel so fortunate, I have friends that drop their coach off and don't get it back for a month.
Jack, Keep at it & you'll have a great trouble free coach to travel in if their is such an animal. I have spent hundreds of hours to get it up to snuff and have had a painless trip otherwise. I had the same experience with every camper I have owned.

Totally amazing! I called them Monday mid-day to see if a transmission was available and dropped it off Tuesday AM. Transmission was installed & ready to go this afternoon, 31 hours after dropping it off. They were wondering what the PTO on the transmission ran, fan, power steering ? They had never seen a bus with a PTO on the transmission. There were several tour busses in there as well as class 8 trucks. Seemed like an extremely knowledgeable tech who did a great job, the Service Writer and Service Manager were also very experienced & knowledgeable . Atlantic Detroit Diesel Allison Middletown, CT.

Good your back on the road that quick. What is the PTO used for? I don't recall seeing one on our coach.

PTO runs the fan. Engine hydraulic pump runs the power steering and we are back in that shop to check the hydraulic pump pressure as the steering suddenly got difficult.
