Allison operating temps
#1

What is the operating temperature range for the Allison 6 speed?
I'm using VMSPC and wondering what is normal.

I am not sure what is normal, but I my transmission usually stays around 201-205F.

Today mine was running about the same but on some hard uphills in Kansas it was getting up to 210-215.
It would come back down after I'd crest the hill. Engine temps were getting up to 205 then dropping.
Just wondering what is considered getting close to overheating?

Forest, I have seen the same thing and wondered the same thing. Last time I was at Newell they tested transmission cooling fans and did not find anything wrong....But I am still wondering.

I don't think it's a problem either Bill. I just got the transmission temp gauge working on the vmspc. You know too much information can be a bad thing....
But I did get the speedometer on the vmspc within less than 1 mph of my speedometer in 3 tries!

Forrest,

I see exactly the same thing, 215 max on longer hills. I fretted about it for a couple of years. The Allison tech info says no problem. I have changed the fluid in mine and it was not discolored from heat. I think Ron Skeen says his is the same too. When it hits 215, I think it turns on the fans because it is too coincidental tha it always hits 215 and then drops like a rock.

I am a big proponent of using synthetic ATF in transmissions. Allison recommends 300,000 miles or 4 year oil change intervals, on their 6 speed transmissions when using large capacity Gold filters and Mobil Delvac or Castrol TranSynd.

So John what does Newell charge for a transmission fluid change to Transynd and filter change?
Not sure what is in my Newell #486 or the last time it was serviced.
Thanks.

I had mine changed over to transynd when I bought it from MOT. It was about 5 or $600.00. It holds about 36 qts. on a oil change and trransynd is about $50.00 and gal. plus the filters. Since it had dextron it will need the main filter change in about a year and add several more qts. Chappell

Forest, you can take it to any Detroit dealer and they have everything need to change the fluid and the filters. I suggest you consider synthetic. With synthetic, you should not have to change it again for 100,000 miles.
