New 220V Induction Cooktop Wiring
#31

It is possible to tale a single 120 vac leg from the transformer and wire it to both sides of a 50 amp power plug. There would be no 220 vac available with this install but the other brands of coaches will work fine as they hove no 220 vac devices.

The power transformer on the nearby pole is tapped at each end of the output coil and in the middle of the coil for the neutral. This provides two 120 vac legs, end of coil to middle, the neutral, that are out of phase. So, 220 vac from leg to leg or across the entire output coil of the transformer.

So, leg to neutral equals 120 vac, either leg. Leg to leg equals 220 vac. A 30 amp RV plug has only one leg, 120 vac, so no 220 vac is available.

Now having said that, there are some owners with 30 amp RVs that have adapeted a 30 amp clothes dryer plug for their rv. When the rv was plugged in, all 120 vac devices were fried. That is because the house wiring electrician properly wired the plug for a dryer by putting one leg to one socket, a second leg to another socket and the neutral to the third socket. A 30 amp, 220 vac clothes dryer worked fine but not a 30 amp 120 vac RV.

If you are not up on your electical knowledge, see Richard or an electrican. Hope this helps.

Will do. I’m obviously not as savvy on the electrical side as I thought.

Not surprised and not the first time. Lol

I want to replace the Gaggenau with induction. cannot seem to figure out the trick to removing the Gaggenau.  pushed up from the bottom, placed blade on top around the edge -no go. Any help appreciated.

If yours isn't gas then it is already an induction burner.

Induction cooktop creates heat by the inductance of magnetic lines of flux into a steel metal pan creating heat. Aluminum pots and pans will not work unless you put a steel object in the pot. Infrared burners is a coil of tungsten wire that heats up like a light bulb and creates heat that way.

John,

This isn’t the best pic in the world, but on mine it looks like the the wooden block is held by a finger on the stove top. The finger prevents the top from moving upwards. You might try to pry the wooden blocks out of the way.

I am very interested in what you replace it with. I have often thought of using an induction slightly larger than the existing opening so the new top could be flush mounted.

Also are you going with a 120V unit or a 240 unit. I have a 120V portable unit, and there a times where wish for more than the 1800 watt maximum, or at least a larger diameter heating area.

Existing unit Carl, is not induction. heating coils. I put induction in our kitchen years ago, far superior to any other cooking type. Only recently has caught on in US.
sure you need special pans, worth it in my opinion. Put one in my Prevost as well. I will be putting in the following once I find those locking tabs Richard kindly pointed out. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/LA...s_nvfly_yl
the wooden blocks on mine are super close to the unit.

as a side note, when we went to get a demonstration of the induction for our kitchen at appliance store, they hadd installed a washlet on the toilet.
I had never seen them before. Amazing device- sometimes referred to as Bidet but certainly not. We immediately put them in our house and coach.
Warm seat, no to little toilet paper and cleaner down there! Previous owner of our new to us Newell, already put in a washlet.

I forgot to say that I believe the cooktop is powered off the electrical panel located aft of the rear bath, which I believe is shore or generator only power.  I am still trying to understand the electrical system design, panel locations.

My apologies  I thought yours was new enough to have one. Gaggenau has the 200 series of induction ranges.

I thought that was what you had already. I know mine being a 96 is to old for it. Mine is Halogen and runs 240 from shore or gen. Mine is also held in with wooden blocks on three sides. The back side does not have one.

On paper looks like this one is a wee bit larger than my current opening of the flip up cover. https://www.amazon.com/Induction-Cooktop...hdGY&psc=1. So it would work nicely as a flush mount. I already treated the coach to a set of the hex clad cookware which works well with induction. I love how easy the hex clad cleans up.

thanks for reinvigorating my effort on this upgrade.

And AMEN on the bidet. Just make sure you have a regulator on the water pressure.
