It will probably overheat after a bit since the blower in the side compartment pressurizes the generator compartment to force cooling air through the radiator and down through the shroud at the bottom. With the compartment open the cooling air won't be forced through the radiator. Not to mention a fire or environmental hazard of diesel leaks.
Yes it runs when extended.
Yes it would overheat.
The leak is from the fuel injector distribution manifold. A small plate on the side of the manifold, that's held on with 4 Philips head screws is leaking.
Now I need to find what that plate is and what kind of seal needs replacing..
It helps if you can give more information, a picture is even better. What make is the engine?
If you start from a cold engine and apply no load, you should be able to run for several minutes. The engine block, radiator, and coolant have to absorb a lot of heat energy before reaching running temp let alone the high temp limit.

Underneath the cover are the delivery pumps driven by a camshaft and it will be oil that is leaking. Clean the surfaces with a solvent that removes all the oil residue and use any RTV sealant and you should be fine. If you want a gasket, Look on the top of the engine valve cover for the model number i.e. 4TN84T****-RKRV, send that to me and i'll get you a gasket.
