Hello All,
I'm wondering if there is a list of coach numbers or dates that used a particular engine version. Specifically, what years did Newell use the DD 8V92 MUI, DDECI, DDECII, DDECIII, etc. I believe 1984 was the first year Newell used the 8V92, and 1994 the 60 series engine saw it's debut, but I could be off. Anybody got the numbers?
Thanks,
Rob Murdock

Thanks Jon, that fits with my guesstimates.
I think the first DDEC was in 1988. It may coincide with the first widebodies, but I'm not too sure.

The 1983 Newells typically used the Detroit 6V92 or the Cummins 903. By at least the middle of the 1984 model year, the Detroit 8V92 mechanical engines were being used. I believe Detroit introduced the DDEC in 1985 but I am not sure when the first DDEC 8V92 was used by Newell. I have heard that at least a few 1987 Newells had DDEC 8V92's. However, during 1988, there were wide-body Newells built with the mechanical 8V92. My 1992 was built before a couple of 1991's and it has the DDEC II 8V92. By 1994, Detroit had introduced the DDEC III in the Series 60's but Newell continued installing the 8V92's until nearly the end of the 1994 model year production. I am not sure that Detroit built 8V92's with DDEC III as it was introduced for the Series 60. The first Series 60 powered Newell that I am aware of was #363, a 1994. The 1994 models ran from #339-371. The last 8V92 installed in a Newell was #376, a 1995. As with most every thing Newell does, there is not a clean break between engine models. Newell typically buys engines in quantity and will try a new engine model in one or more coaches to see how they work out before making a mass change. In the meantime, they will use their existing supply of engines they already have on hand.

My 1986 is the first year of the 102" wide bodies. I believe 1985 was the first year DDEC was offered for the 8V92s, but Newell didn't offer the latest offerings. The Series 60 was introduced in 1987 but wasn't offered in a Newell until 1994.

Thank you Jon. As far as you know was it originally delivered with DDEC III?

Good info fellas, thanks.
I'm still not certain what years the various electronic control versions were used by DD, or by Newell. It does seem that Newell didn't always use the latest version.
My Google search didn't show much info on the 92 series DDEC, and the results were more focused on the 60 series engines. The search did show to my surprise, that the 2 stroke DDs are still being made and used in marine, military, and industrial applications throughout the world.

my 90 newell had an 8v92 ddec2
newell model years seem to be 12-18 months ahead of calendar time. meaning my 2002 coach was made in early 2001 and had an engine that is probably a year older than that.
so hard to look at a 1996 newell and say it should have a recent engine as it could easily have a 1993 or 94 date coded engine.
also, they are very conservative on changing drive trains and do it slowly and cautiously.
