Yesterday I changed the filters, disconnected the waste gate, and reattached the wire to the unknown fuel valve.  It ran great for the 2.5 hour drive up to Pine Grove Furnace State Park, PA.
I really like the extra few pounds of boost, I'll have to do some reading to see what the safe limits are.
I was running 25lbs at 1750 rpm, up hills at 70.  Factory was 22lbs and it took almost 2000 rpm to get there.  It ran at least 50 degrees cooler on the EGT.

We're exploring the Gettysburg area until Saturday then heading home.

Work for me and school for the kids on Monday.   Sad

If you reconnect the waste gate and everything is still good, one might surmise that it was dirty filters. Next unplug mystery fuel wire. If it changes then you can reasonably say it was a loose wire at the heart of the problem.

Yes, I'll finish the investigation at home.
The terrain here is pretty hilly, small roads, with not much shoulder.  I'd rather not have to stop to make adjustments.  I'm just pleased it's back to normal (better).
