I would have cut the corrosion out and used a split bolt with a wad of tape covering it.  Just kidding!    That's also the trouble with covering battery cable ends with glued heat shrink.  They look great all the while covering up the green corrosion.

Perhaps we should all compare our vise photos    I keep trying to talk my brother in law out of an 8" Wilton Machinist Vise he has never used and is like brand new, no joy.
