Just wanted to add this diagnostic that Paul and I noodled over to help decide what the problem was. There can be a number of reasons that you loose power steering, but the two common ones I know of are the loss of hydraulic pump and failed seals within the hydraulic fan motor. The loss of hydraulic pump is obviously a problem because you no longer have hydraulic pressure for either the steering or the fan. The loss of the seal within the hydraulic fan motor is a bit more tricky. The way the fan motor system is designed allows all the hydraulic pressure to simply go through the motor if the internal seals fail, which in turn robs all pressure from the steering.
So, without any gauges to measure pressure at different points, here is what we did to diagnose the root cause. Paul simply unplugged the solenoid that controls fan speed. If the solenoid is unplugged the fan should default to high speed. If the fan does not go into hurricane mode when this is done, then there is no hydraulic pressure. When Paul did this, the fan did NOT go into high mode.
So the hydraulic pump is suspect. The CAT engines have a known issue with the internal coupling between the pump and the engine. I believe that Newell has sent Paul a kit to repair this coupling.
Just posting for the next owner that may have this issue.
