Prior to 1990, the Coach Number for a Newell was not easy to find. It was listed on some of the original paperwork and on the backside of some of the wood panels in the coach or on the inside of the engine compartment doors. During the 1987-1989 period, the tenth digit of the VIN is the letter representation for the model year H is 1987, J is 1988 and K is 1989. The last three digits of the VIN are the sequence number, ie 001 would be the first coach produced during that year and 022 would be the 22nd coach produced that model year. I can give you approximate coach numbers for the years in question.
These are APPROXIMATE COACH NUMBER RANGES
1987 126-159
1988 160-182
1989 182-212
While I have confirmation of several coach number/VIN combinations during these years, I have conflicting data on the exact number of coaches built during some of these years.
Beginning with the 1990 models, the last three digits of the VIN is the coach number.
