Okay......today Richard was able to help me finish trouble shooting the speedometer issue I have had. He removed the "drive" shaft from the transmission to find what I thought we would find....a broken "key". It is different from the outer one that plugs into the speedometer generator unit. Here is a picture of it. I'm not sure what this is called, because I cannot find one that looks like this using generator key, or vdo generator key....the generator is vdo. Is there another technical name for this little 1.5 inch shaft?

I have narrowed it down to a tach drive tang, speedometer drive tang....they look the same......just need to find one. Here is what it looks like unbroken.

Clark. If you can't find one go to a speedometer repair shop. Or just buy a repair kit and make one.

Take a GOOD look at your cable or drive unit. Something caused the tang to twist several times. Without fixing that, you'll only be right back where you are now.

There is no cable drive unit. It plugs into a 5 inch long shaft that connects on one end to the Allison transmission, and on the other to the signal generator. In between, inside the shaft, are gears....it was dry in there, and now it is lubed up nicely. Just need the drive tang now.

How would I make one?

Clark,
When I started working at Mack 15 years ago, they had 1000's of different speedo parts. I just called there & the guy who would know where they were was not there. If you can get the dims, I will have them look for it tomorrow

Hi Gordon!

I'm attaching a copy of the spec sheet showing the tang. It is 1.25" long. The square part of the shaft is .104" square. Thank you for your help!!!
