1986 Newell Coach 8v92 with 4speed Allison Tranmission
Just driving along, lost power, was able to get to side of road. Presently will go in reverse. Had some transmission fluid exit the upper driver side of the 8V92 motor which might have come out of transmission dipstick? Lost aprox 2 quarts of transmission fluid, replaced it but still will not go in forward. I think it is the torque converter or something in the transmission?
I looked at the linkage on the side of transmission and it seemed to be working fine. Reverse & neutral seem to be there but when you go to 1-4 gears it won't go. I can feel it shift into reverse fine, but when trying to select forward gears it tries to rock forward slightly and does not move and motor bogs down like under load
There is no problem w/brakes or air pressure. Looking for suggestions. Probably Kalispell MT or Missoula MT might be best bet for service ?. This is coach #106 allison 4 speed automatic transmission w/a 8V92
Looking for a mechanic recommendation !
Any ideas the problem ?

So additional info,,,, when driving 50 mph up hill engine bogged and almost died as it felt like brakes were being applied I almost made it off the road ... was idling on the side of road at a stop.
Realized reverse still worked and was able to back off the hwy. to a safe area.
So I'm thinking that the transmission told the engine not to go forward while traveling up the road, but reverse works fine.
Was on some 60 miles rough dirt roads in Glacier NP . Maybe ground or wire connections are to fault ??
Drove 1800 miles last 75 days with no issues

You said you lost some fluids and replaced them? from my experience with Allison transmissions if they get "hot" they go into a self protect mode. I would try shutting everything off if your in a safe location. Like kill the motor. Let it sit for 30 minutes to cool and try it again. I've had to do this with military truck with a Detroit 60 and Allison combo. Allison transmissions have many many safety features most are unaware of.

By chance were any of the brakes warm when it quit on you? Air pressure holding steady?

Ht740 is not an electronic transmission. It shifts either by mechanical means, either cable and manual shifter from cockpit or Bennett air shifter which just shifts the mechanical lever at the transmission. It you can confirm it is shifting to forward gears, probably transmission related. There is a modulator on the side with an air line, I could see it going bad allowing to much air pressure into the trans blowing fluid out of it, if it’s not that, then may need trans repair.

Does your coach have a transmission retarder? Your description leads me to brakes. Check parking brake valve. Also air brake quick release valve. On my Classic Newell the rear one was mounted above rear axle. There should be one for front axle as well.

So when break down occurred ,I was only 3 miles from starting point so over heating was not an issue .
Air pressure was up all the way on supply and brakes. No air pressure issues
I need help to figure out if retarder is issue, I'm confused
Not sure how to tell if brake's are issue ,
Trying to arrange tow and trans replacement

I'm thinking you can look at the position of the rear brake linkage to see if the parking brake is actuated .
You might also look from inboard to see if there is a gap between brake shoes and drum .
I am away from my coach at the moment so I can't describe brake linkage position .
The owner's manual states that the engine has sufficient torque to break parts if parking brake is engaged when trying to pull away .
Having said all that , your coach will reverse . It would seem that the brake should hold in either direction .

Jeff, After talking with you it occurred to me that if you were on an incline the trans may have tried to shift to a lower gear without fully dsengaging from the higher gear. That would certainly cause friction!
