No fuel coming from the tank to the first filter. Removed an inline check valve and we'll see if that's the problem. If not that, it's something in the pickup. Either way it runs like a champ from a tank

Progress . It is a long and winding journey from tank to primary filter . Goes through the fuel/ water separator , driver's side .
There are two separators , main engine and generator .
About three years ago I replaced my separators with more modern units , Racor copies .
Worried about compromising flow , I removed the filter elements . This was a mistake , and resulted in losing " prime" .
Engine acted similar to yours , but it would die once aux fuel was removed .
I ended up putting a gear pump inline , driven with a drill . Once I had a solid flow of fuel to primary filter problem was solved .

Since you were able to actually drive the coach , I think you have a restriction somewhere or pulling air somewhere as has been mentioned .

Both genset and main engine now running good. I had to remove the check valve. But she's got lots of power now.
Now I just have a low passenger rear. I took apart the leveler valve and got it working, but now it's back to no air in the bag...

Are you speaking of the HCV , height control valve ? 
Two on the rear axle , one on the front .

Terry, read the first few pages of this manual. The setup is not intuitive. https://www.hwhcorp.com/ml20635.pdf

There are critical takeaways. One the six pack, or solenoid manifold is BETWEEN the air supply and the air bags. Two, the HCV has supply air always. Three, the raise solenoids have a separate air supply.

So, Thanks again to everyone who offered help with this one!

Ladies and gentlemen, WE GOT HER...home.

The problem was a check valve in the fuel line just above the main tank, who knew?
We had the rig sitting straight for a minute, and then it went back to listing to the passenger side. So, we replace the Haldex leveler on that side, and still no joy, it still only rose about two inches on that side.

The rig didn't want to raise air pressure so I ran the engine compressor backed up with the electric compressor and then rigged a pancake compressor in as well, and that got us home. Basically, just barely overcoming all the air leaks with brute force.

The good news:

The engine and trans ran perfect all the way home, about 6 hours, and the jake brake works and sounds amazing through the broken exhaust. I don't think the gauges can be completely trusted but, it ran about 70-75mph at about 2250rpm and it seemed pretty happy there. Temps all stayed low, and boost was at 1/4 to maybe 1/2 of the gauge stroke, under the hardest acceleration, if that's even accurate.

Lots of power, I could even accelerate up hill. What manner of devilry is this? My old coach was a Wanderlodge with a front mounted 3208 Cat making 250HP and something like negative 27LbsFt of torque, so this Detroit was just wonderful all the way home.

The steering needs more caster, as the return to center was kind of weak and the brakes worked fine but I might get a new set of shoes for the old girl, she deserves them. The head lights kept going on and off, that was fun.

Obviously, after sitting for what I’m betting is at least 20 years, there is a laundry list of items that need attention, both mechanically and cosmetically. So that will be the next adventure, starting with the roof leaks.

Terry I just had the same issue on a Newell I was helping get going, the check valve was stuck and we were not getting any fuel. I found a check valve to replace the original, it had -12jic fittings. So this is what I replaced the original with:
