Cooling Fan - Multi-Wing Z Series Fan
#51

For a shop that has the right machine that would be a very easy repair, probably would only have to take 0.005"-to 0.010" to clean it up and it would not shorten the shaft up very much, if the don;t have the right machine or know how to use it properly it would not turn out right and vibrate until it come apart again.

I reached out to my WingFan contact unfortunately he has retired.

I did talk to this young man. He can help order a new fan.

His predecessor hooked me up with new blades at a reasonable price.

Good luck!

Hmm, I didn't see this Sad  I bought the fan assembly from Newell for around 750 after shipping Sad

I took it to a freightliner repair place.  They are going to buy parts to rebuild the overhung adapter.  Zero-max they said they didn't have any units built and that it would take until the end of the month to make one.  They said the last order they had was placed last year.  Ultimately, I could have bought one from Newell, but that would have cost a ton.  We shall see if the rebuild works first.  Hopefully, it will work and be relatively inexpensive.

Corey,

Not trying to overwhelm you, but read through this post till you get to the part where I filled the OHLA with grease and bypassed the Newell design. It has worked great and eliminated a leak source. https://newellgurus.com/showthread.php?t...&pid=52619

At any case, there is one CRITICAL step in reassembling the OHLA that must be done correctly. It’s a simple device so the FL shop may not take the time to carefully read the manufacturers instructions. There is a circlip that holds the bearings inside the case. That is common. That circlip is TAPERED. The purpose of the taper is to preload the bearings. If it is put in backwards the bearings will be too loose. Make sure the shop knows about the taper.

And you are asking, what is a circlip? https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/...UQEA&adurl=

That’s not the one in the OHLA, just sending a pic of one, so you know what we are talking about.

Thank you for the info.  I will let the shop know.

Anyone on this thread know what size the key should be?  So now the shop has all of the parts but is missing the key.  They said the ones they have are too big.  I was going to go to Tractor Supply and buy an assorted pack, but I want to make sure that I get one that will actually fit.  Any ideas?

So finally I have gotten the right parts and have been fixed. It was an adventure.

I ended up buying the shaft keys from an auto parts store.

All in all this cost me about 8000 or so to replace the fan assembly and the front portion of the fan motor (the overhung adapter).

The fan was about 800 after taxes and shipping.
The overhung adapter was 4100 after taxes and shipping.
The labor ended up being about 2100 from a rate of 185 an hour.

I also had to stay in campgrounds for about 2.5 weeks and hotels for 5 nights. That cost at least another 800-1k.

All in all, this sucked because I had bought the coach only a month ago, but at least it is running now and I hope the memories will make up for the short-term costs.

I feel your pain.

I’m glad you’re up and running again.

The fan should undergo inspections and blades should probably be changed after a period of in service years. Ten, fifteen, or twenty years??? Blades are exposed to significant heat and won’t last for ever.

Good luck.

Of course.

The fan assembly was something I couldn't find anywhere but with Newell.  I will upload the invoice for the fan and the adapter.

The adapter was the one that someone else here posted a diagram for.  I had called the manufacturer Zero-Max and they said that the part number for them was the same number as the diagram file name, so if someone wanted to call them that is the detail.  They don't sell direct, so they can send people to distributers.  The distributers don't have them in stock and there is a month or more delay in ordering and receiving as Zero-Max makes them each time it is ordered.  They have none on hand.  They did have parts enough for 1 rebuild, but even that would have had to go through a distributor and they wanted almost as much for the full new unit from Newell and then I would have had to pay to rebuild it.  If you could rebuild it yourself and don't mind the labor, you can save maybe 1k total to buy the rebuild and rebuild it.

The fan seems to be a fan that is used on large compressors.  I found the adjustable ones like this online but not in relation to diesel trucks, rather large compressors.  They still didn't look exactly right.  Newell had one on hand so they were able to get me one.  They originally sent me the wrong size.  For my coach, I needed a 32" version.  The initial one was around 38" so I had to wait another 2 days to get the correct size and send the other one back.  The invoice is for the larger one but I am not sure there is a difference in the parts.  Definitely ask if you are getting it from Newell.  I would measure first so you know which size you need.

All in all, these parts are unique and aren't ones you can just buy anywhere.  It stinks because they will end up running out and no one will have them
