I lost about a gallon of fluid when my gauge sprang a leak. This is the fluid that operates the fan and perhaps the steering. Should I buy hydraulic fluid and if so what weight? If Dextron III is recommended, can I put in synthetic?

I used power steering fluid in mine, I believe its real close to 32 hydraulic fluid. Atf will work too, I havent used much synthetic, but was thinking of changing my trans fluid to the allison synthetic. I have heard people using engine oil in their power steering/ fan setup.

If you use engine oil in the power steering hydraulic fan set up you MUST completely clean the system of the old fluid or the engine oil will form tar balls.
Chester, what color is the distinguished fluid? Red like ATF? Or darker like hyd fluid?

It is red, so it must be ATF. That is what I will use.
