Generator offloading before shutting down
#1

It has been my practice to offload the generator for a short while prior to shutting it down reducing loading significantly thereby letting things cool down and get a breather.

However, after I upgraded to lithium batteries and added and auto gen start/stop logic to the victron GX it seems that the challenge is much more difficult and I have not been using that functionality.

The big loads on the system are the a/c systems, Aquahot if on electric heat, and battery charging.

The normal automatic logic is to turn the generator on when the battery gets low, and turns off at some point higher without regard to loading.

How important is my initial assessment/process to all of the systems, considering the only time I would want this functionality is while boondocking (my normal)?

Personally I like to unload the generator and let it cool down and I also like to load it up slowly. Its always better for the generator. Can the generator handle the full load at once, sure it can and most likely in the big scheme of things it will not be a big issue. I have installed large generators, up to 1MW.. that's megawatt and they are back up generators that all take the entire load all at once, its what they are designed to do. I am sure its hard on the generator windings but overall who knows the effect on longevity, other items wear out probably before its an issue. You may look into a delay on break timer to allow the engine to cool down after the transfer switch drops out.
