I'm currently using a Progressive portable SP that plugs into power pole.
I am considering hard wiring one into my Newell downstream from the power TX switch giving it the ability to protect both pole and generator power. Is this a common practice?

My Progressive SP got stolen - they did at least plug us back into the pole… :-(

Dean, when I first installed the Progressive, I had it downstream of the xfer switch. I did not like how it behaved. It added a delay to power coming on from the generator, so I moved to just protect on the shore power side.

Dean,
A generator can only produce 300% overload, surges are pretty minor so, my votes sides with “in commercial side”.

When my TR switch went bad I replaced with a TR switch and EMS combo unit which had to be installed downstream of both sources for the switch to function. It works great but does have a delay when switching to both shore and gen.
However I no longer have the ability to manually switch between shore and gen as my new "smart" switch automatically defaults to the gen any time it is running which I think is the reason I can't get any power when hooked into only a 30 amp plug after running the gen. I haven't tested my theory on this but will soon.
