The model number an 8 digit number, typically listed on the sticker on the valve cover and on the block. For Newell 8V92's the first four digits of the Model Number will likely be 8087.

3, 4, 7 or 8 in the 6th position of the model number would be a mechanical engine. A DDEC I would have an "A" in the 6th position of the model number. As Dave indicated, a "B" in the 6th position would be DDEC II and a "K" would be a DDEC III.

Further information for mechanical engines:
3 is turbocharged
4 is aftercooled
7 is the Turbo Torque engine
8 is the Aftercooled Turbo Torque

Don the connector should be under or behind the dash near the steering column. That is where it is on most Newells. It may just be a loose 12 pin rectangular connector rather than being attached to anything. I know there were mechanical 8V92's installed even a year after yours. Does yours have the yellow Check Engine Light and the Red Stop Engine Light on the dash? The DDEC I had separate EDU and ECM units. DDEC II combines the EDU and ECM into one box.

Thanks Michael It has the two lights on the dash , they actually work as it shut me down when the rad was a little low ! I will have another look for the connector , at least I changed a couple dash lights last time peeking in there !
