That's correct for coaches 2006 or earlier.
For coaches made in 2007 or later, the last 4 digits of the VIN are the coach numbers.
Congrats on your purchase. What coach number do you have?

Joe is correct, use the last three digits for Newells from model years 1990-2006. The coach number was not a part of the VIN prior to 1990 and The numbering system didn't begin until 1983 so coach prior to 1983 were never assigned a "Coach Number" only a VIN or Serial Number.
For 2007, use the last three digits IF they are less than 7817 and use the last four digits if the last three digits are between 200 and 216. Newell skipped 817-1199 to account for the coaches built prior to 1990. After 2007 use the last four digits.
Between 1981 and 1989, the last three digits are the sequence number of the coach during that model year and start over at 001 each year. I have spent many hours over the past 10-15 years trying to tie coach numbers to VIN numbers for pre 1990 coaches. Some I am confident in, others, not so much.
If you use AutoCheck.com, you will find that they miss identify the year on coaches 2010 and newer Newells showing the model year to be 30 years older than it actually is.
