04 blown front tire damage -
encantotom - 10-30-2024
this morning my daughter called and said she saw a newell broke down on the side of the road about 10 minutes from our house on a busy bypass highway.
i was driving and nearby so i detoured and went to see if i could help. a very nice couple who had been full timing in it for 11 years and 26 years on the road. the front tire blew and ripped the wheelwell up, destroyed the rim and ripped the front entry door off.
they said he calmly took about 300 yards and was able to get off the road safely.
i gave them my contact info and stopped a second time to see if there was anything i could do and offered my help, and to come stay with us if they wanted to.

Glad everyone was OK!
Any idea what vintage, brand, type of tire that was?

Glad everyone is OK.
I would suggest that if they can find the remaining fiberglass fender well, they can put those back together. They run about $3K.
Definitely check all the remaining tires for date code.
It is hard to tell the year on that coach, do they have 365s? If not, they are supposed to give extra margin.
Sorry to see this happen, but it is recoverable.

Terrible and a front tire at that! Glad they are OK its a good heart check for sure I know. A slide coach with front entry is sort of rare isn't it?

If any vehicle needs the 365 it's the Newell with slides. I don't know what the axle weights are but mine would have the highest weight rated tires available on the steer.
Actually the outcome is a tribute to Newell suspension and steering components to get that under control and safely off the road. I can only imagine the horror of these few seconds. Nice job for sure.

For sure my greatest fear while traveling and have tried to replay over and over in my mind exactly how I would react. Glad everyone is safe. Seems odd to me that a tire blowing would force the door to come off, but clearly it happened. That would make be the worst part of the ordeal.

From 1997 when the first Newell with slides were built, until #606 in 2001, all slide Newells were mid-entry. Although there were a handful of front entry Newells prior to 2004, sales of front entry coaches really increased each year after 2004. By 2006, sales of mid entry and front entry were nearly equal. By the 2007 model year, the majority of Newells sold were front entry. Between 2008 and 2019 less than 25% of the Newells built were mid entry each year. 2022-2024 saw a significant increase in the number of mid entry coaches. The 2025 model year continues the resurgence of mid entry Newells with over 40% of the production being devoted to mid entry. The level of mid entries in the past 3-4 years had not been seen in almost 20 years.

Very interesting , Michael! You continue to add valuable insight and knowledge to the Newell culture!

Yes, I too am wondering how the door came loose. I’m sure that added significant additional “pucker” to an already intense event!
