What is this? - cwl1979 - 10-02-2024

While tracing wires for my Aqua-Hot rebuild i toned the line for the wet bay thermostat and noticed this was cracked. Looks like a water filtration unit of some sort. Anyone know exactly what this is?

Some coaches had a reverse osmosis system on board. Could also be a secondary water filtration system. I would replace that with something newer and cleaner as that unit is probably original to the coach.

It must be. I'm having a heck of a time finding it on google. So far my best guess is a water softener system. Those aren't expensive either, only 170 ish on Amazon.

On 316 that was a charcoal filter. I removed it .

I have one, it's a "permanent" water filter system. Company is long gone. Feel free to bypass/remove.

I put this water softener in its place .

Thanks for the replies. It did look like tiny bits of charcoal were coming out of the crack in the side of it. I'll replace it with a softener and filter system.

Carl,

According to the certification numbers, that’s an antibacterial silver nitrate water filter. Some version was installed in lots of coaches back then.

Great idea in theory. No company lasted long enough to get to sell replacement inserts. Those are typically needed after ~70,000 gal through the filter.

That's interesting. Some google research comes up with really nice facts about using silver nitrate in conjunction with charcoal for fresh water cleaning. Shows it can kill almost all bacteria and most fungus as well. It wont harm algae though.
Thanks for that wisdom.

The only downside I’m aware of with those filters- besides you can’t get parts anymore- is they don’t like chlorine. Bleach sterilizing your water system required bypassing that unit. My previous Wanderlodge had one (different brand) and it was also a 1996.

While a replacement filter was never found for ours, I figured I had another 10 years of usage before it really needed attention 70,000 gal divided by 120 gal tank is 583 full fills. My coach was getting about 10 fills per year on average.
