sight tube for hydraulic tank in engine compartment - encantotom - 04-20-2024

hi,

i was running some wires for my new camera in the rear engine area above the hydraulic tank and must have bumped the 6 inch sight tube on the outside.  it is the original and i am sure is brittle

it is 1/4 od just like a 1/4 inch dot air line.  it uses compression fittings on the clear tube.  it is slowly dripping on the bottom fitting.

so....it you have replace it what did you use.  i am looking on amazon for it and rigid acrylic tubing is a choice.

suggestions?

tom

Check McMaster Carr or Grainger.

I will have to check mine, plan to drain my system and do some work on it, would be a good time to go ahead and replace that sight tube while I am at it.

Tom,
I took mine apart a while back because it was leaking. Boy, did I lose an hour of my life when the tiny gasket fell to the ground and manage to run away so far that it defied physics! lol

Turned out I got it to stop leaking and didn’t need to replace the unit. I had one lined up from McMaster though.

My only thought about acrylic would be deterioration from the fluid which could cause discoloration or worse?

Would the fluid get over 140ºF?

Dunno. But I bet the current sight tube is acrylic

ok, went to drain the tank......it has a fixed screen in the opening so i cant get a siphon tube in it

any brilliant ideas on how to drain the fluid without making an incredible mess?

If you can get a right angle screwdriver on the screws that attach the cap assembly, you can remove the part that has the screen.

You can crack one of the lines going to the ‘gold’ block on the left side of the engine, and it will self drain. But you have to manage the flow into some sort of catch container.
