ADS Sound system - qcj - 01-15-2015

I took the cover off above the drivers seat where the two speaker are located and this is what was behind the cover.  Looks like several relays and two black ADS boxes on the left.  What do these two boxes do?  I am planning on doing some updating on the sound system, like for one thing replacing the Yamaha AV receiver that probably came with the coach.

The ads boxes are the crossovers for the speakers. The relays switch the sound source for the speakers between your home thentre and the car stereo

I've used the Polk Audio DB series separates in several vehicles and been pleased with the results, they come with the crossovers. I also have been quite satisfied with Crutchfield for their support and service, the last system that I installed in my Mercedes was making a noise that I wasn't happy with and they sent noise filters at no cost and no hassle. Let me add to what Tom said. The relay is to switch the speakers from the dash radio to the in house stereo. Some of them are powered by the antenna up lead on the dash radio, making it a 12V relay. Some are triggered by the switched 110 output on the house stereo, making it of course a 110 relay.

If you get a scratchy noise , or lose a channel or more of your speakers, that relay is the first thing to suspect.

What is happening is that I am only getting one speaker to work and it is the one above the driver.  This is on the 110 Yamaha receiver.  On the 12 volt radio I get both fronts and rears. I have taken the speakers wires off  and wired them to the one working connection at the back of the Yamaha and each 5 sections of speakers will work when I connect them to this one working connection. So knowing that do you think it is one of relays or a RV receiver that needs replacing?

switch the speaker wires on the back of the receiver and you can tell if the problem switches. if it does, it is the relay probably. there are 2 of them so just switch the relays and see if the problem switches.

If I read your correctly, all five speakers will work if hooked to one specific output on the Yamaha. But the other outputs on the Yamaha do not provide sound. Do all five (or four) channels work when you are using your dash radio?

Are the relays powered by the dash or the Yamaha?

But it does sound like only one channel of the Yamaha is putting out sound. Please ensure that the balance and fade adjustments are center, and you haven't accidentally adjusted the receiver to bias all the sound into that channel.

You could of course hook up any old speaker or earbuds to the other channels to check too.

When driving, I often have speakers cut out and sometimes scratchy...but if I turn the radio up then the problem goes away. I think my system uses the sound channel to do the switching.

My plan is to completely bypass the relay by mounting radio speakers in the dash cover and use the nice speakers for the TV. It's clear that Newell figured this out since the new coaches have speakers mounted in the dash cover.

Tom, I will switch the relays tomorrow.  I have switch all the wires on the back of the Yamaha and they only work on one connection.

Richard, The dash radio works on all speakers inside the coach.  I presume that the relays work off the Yamaha because the switch is not on.  I have the manual and all settings are correct.  I completely redid my Foretravel sound system and had no problem, but that doesn't mean I know entirely what I am doing.  I have six channel, 5 inside the coach and one in the TV bay.  The TV has it's own two speakers and there are two other ADS speakers which work when those wires are connected to the working one channel on the Yamaha.
